An electronic label makes a smart library

Looking in through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows, the 16-square-meter mini-library is lined with wooden bookshelves in a staggered fashion, and neatly arranged books are stacked on the bookshelves. There is only one staff member who does some sorting work from time to time. As for borrowing and returning books, the students who came in and out had already completed it autonomously in front of a machine.
 
This is the "Campus Smart Library" located in Guangzhou No. 6 Middle School. This is a high-tech project independently developed by Guangzhou Qunshu Expo Education Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Qunshu Expo Company"). Used by 22 primary and secondary schools in Guangzhou. In addition, smart libraries for elementary and middle schools in Beijing, Jilin and other places and community smart libraries in Huizhou, Foshan are also under construction.

"The'smart library' is a'four-in-one' reading service innovation model in which the government provides financial support, schools provide venues, public libraries provide abundant resources, enterprises provide technology and services, and gathers multiple advantageous resources to serve readers. "In a public speech, Tang Chenyang, chairman of Qunshu Expo, defined "smart library".
 
  "Smart Library" is dedicated to linking the millions of books in public libraries with the libraries of primary and secondary schools with insufficient collections, and enriching the number and categories of school books. Two years ago, the Guangzhou Municipal Education Bureau, Guangzhou Children's Library, and the Group Book Expo Company started cooperation on pilot projects. The "Campus Smart Library" developed and produced by Qunshu Expo has thus entered 9 key schools in Guangzhou.
 
  According to the "Government Procurement Project Acceptance Report" signed by Qunshu Expo Company and Guangzhou Education Equipment Center in 2013, the value of the Guangzhou government procurement contract reached more than 4 million yuan that year.
 
   This money is mainly used to pay for the equipment costs ranging from 300,000 to 500,000 yuan in the "smart library", and the maintenance cost of 10,000 to 50,000 yuan per year. Compare the traditional school library that requires 1 million to 3 million yuan in equipment investment, maintains costs as high as 300,000 to 700,000 yuan per year, and has a circulation of only 6,000 books, and the "smart library" with an annual circulation of 30,000 books. The price/performance ratio is not low,
 
   In addition, compared to the traditional school library, which often requires a site area of ​​more than 100 square meters, the "smart library" has much simpler requirements for the site. Taking 22 schools in Guangzhou as an example, the area of ​​the "smart library" is concentrated between 16-35 square meters, and a "smart library" covering an area of ​​20 square meters has a maximum collection of 4,000 books.
 
   "The campus smart library is linked to the public library on one end, and the user terminal on the other end, which transfers a large amount of idle resources and services to the school, effectively realizing the optimal allocation of resources." said Tang Chenyang, chairman of Qunshu Expo.
 
   The reporter learned from the Group Book Expo Company that at present, in 22 schools in Guangzhou, each "smart library" obtains an average of 3,000 books from the Guangzhou Children's Library, and the circulation rate is as high as 2,800 books per month. In addition, the "smart library" system can also efficiently and accurately provide users with books of interest to meet the personalized borrowing needs of teachers and students, thereby increasing the borrowing rate. Xie Liang, director of the Office of the Group Book Expo Company, told Times Weekly that, taking Guangzhou Foreign Language School as an example, the school has more than 100,000 books, and the literature borrowing rate is only 7.8%, while the number of "smart libraries" in the school is 3100. However, the literature borrowing rate is as high as 297.9%.

  In most people’s established impressions, library staff need to hold infrared scanners, align the barcodes on the books, and complete the borrowing process of each book one by one, which is tedious and laborious.
 
  In the smart library, borrowing and returning books, no matter how many books are, it only takes one step. Xie Liang said: "This technology called electronic tag technology (RFID) has been applied to the field of book management for the first time. The principle is similar to that of a car driving on a highway, which can be monitored throughout. We use radio frequency technology, as long as it is within the radio frequency range. The books in the library can be identified by wireless technology, which realizes the completion of multiple books in one scan, which greatly improves the management efficiency. In theory, the smart library does not require any staff. At present, most campus smart libraries only retain one A staff member was present."
 
Xie Liang picked up a book casually, pointed to the round label pasted on the last page and said: "The premise of using electronic label technology is that the book has this." This aluminum 50mm×50mm label is a kind of Passive low-power integrated circuit products with antenna, memory and control system. Its memory can read and write basic information of books more than 100,000 times, which is equivalent to the barcode in traditional book management and is used for book identification and security Anti-theft.

 Currently, the price of RFID book tags is more than 2 yuan each. Taking the 3.8 million books of Guangzhou Children's Library in 2013 as an example, the cost is as high as 7.6 million yuan. Xie Liang said frankly that "this one is more expensive." It is precisely because of this that QunBook Expo's plan to build 1,000 "smart libraries" across the country in 2015 failed to meet the target. "The promotion of smart libraries in remote areas such as Xinjiang will also affect the choice of local governments.
